Good to know about Isparta

HISTORY and GEOGRAPHY:

Isparta is a place of natural, cultural and historic beauty. The city has always been an important place to settle in the region of Pisidia and its history goes back to the early Stone Age. The name “Isparta” was derived from its Pisidian name “Baris”. Throughout history, many civilizations have populated the city. Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Hellenes, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans ruled the area. This extensive historic background has enriched the city. Called Hamidabad since before the republic, the area gained provincial status in 1923 and was named Isparta in 1926. The province of Isparta is in the heartlands of Turkey’s Western Mediterranean region. Its flora and fauna are rich. Isparta is the pearl of the the Lake Region, scented with the smell of roses.

The population numbers 150.000 in the city and half a million in the total province. On its surface of 8933 km2 there are plenty of lakes, national parks and nature reserves. The lakes of Egirdir, Kovada and Gölcük form the “Golden Triangle”. Isparta is the province with the biggest number of lakes and dams in Turkey.
