First settlements in Aşıklı, which is situated on a tuff land in the Aksaray Cappadocia, began in 8000 B.C. (Ten thousand years ago from today). Aşıklıhöyük is the oldest village settlement of Anatolia and Near East that belongs to Aceramic, Neolithic period.
Aksaray has been the cradle of various civilizations during its long history. Hatti tribe lived in Anatolia between 3000- 2000 B.C. Assyrian merchants took up commercial relations on these lands.
At the end of the colonial period, the Hittite Empire came from Caucasus in 1700 B.C., established small city-states and became a military state in the Anatolia.

Ihlara
The Christianity spread out by apostle St. Paul and his disciples in the 1st century A.C. in Anatolia, but got reactions from the Roman partisans who believed in more than one god. So, the first Christians began to live in places that were more suitable for their protection. In addition, numbers of religious men who wanted to retire into seclusion also moved to this region.
In the reign of Kılıçarslan II, palaces, medresses (schools), and caravanserais were constructed in Aksaray where Seljuks took under their sovereignty in 1142.
Kılıçarslan II built a palace and changed its name into “Aksaray” from “Arkhelais”. Aksaray was considered as the second capital.
İshak Pasha conquered Aksaray in 1470 and took the city under the Ottoman sovereignty. The majority of Aksaray people were transferred to Istanbul for the inhabiting of the city that was emptied after the conquest of Istanbul. For this reason, there is a region called Aksaray in Istanbul.
Aksaray became a province in 1920 (Hegira 1336). It was abrogated and became an administrative district in Niğde. It became a province again on 15 June 1989.
In this region that has many religions in its structure there are many religious monuments and works that belong to Islamic and Christianity periods. The 29 monuments which were chosen from hundreds of works were found worth to be observed for the tourism of relief.

The 8 of these monuments are Islamic monuments and each of these is a masterpiece and have being visited by hundred thousands of people. These works are;
The Ulu Mosque (Karamanoğlu Mountain), The crooked Minaret (Eğri Minaret), The Tomb of Tapduk Emre, The Tomb of Sheikh Hamid-i Veli (Somuncu Baba), The Tomb of Kılıçarslan, The Tomb of Yunus Emre and Selime Sultan and The Kaya Mosque.
